New firm helps companies balance data analytics and consumer privacy

Data security is a hot topic these days, with retail breaches and encryption security flaws raising the public awareness month after month.

But that’s not the only issue businesses collecting large amounts of data need to be mindful of, said Lydia Jones, an experienced Internet attorney who recently launched Nashville-based consulting firm In Sage.

Jones’ firm, which officially launched at the end of last year and is currently in “hiring mode,” helps companies navigate the balance between collecting consumer data and protecting privacy.

While the hot-button issue of data security is a “zero sum” – companies need to prevent criminals from gaining access to customers’ data – collecting data also leaves companies vulnerable to more nuanced, layered issues related to the balance between consumer privacy and commercial interest, Jones said.
