A new oil and gas institute is to be launched at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
The institute, which will be housed in the university’s new £89 million technology and innovation centre, will support the oil and gas industry in addressing “key challenges”.
One of the biggest challenges the industry faces is ageing infrastructure, and the university suggests around 30 per cent of the 7,000 platforms in operation globally are more than 20 years old.
The Strathclyde Oil & Gas Institute will focus on issues including the design of platforms and the monitoring of equipment through to its final decommissioning.
The university said the institue will also offer companies access to its research and its facilities, and will pull in expertise from its faculties of engineering, science, business and humanities & social sciences.
University principal Professor Sir Jim McDonald said: “The Strathclyde Oil & Gas Institute represents an important step forward for the university’s contribution to the sector.
