Odfjell Drilling has taken delivery of its latest ultra-deepwater semi-submersible rig, which is set for a seven-year contract with BP in the West of Shetland region.

The Norwegian contractor took delivery of the Deepsea Aberdeen from South Korea-based Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).

Deepsea Aberdeen adds to Odfjell Drilling's fleet of harsh environment and ultra-deepwater drilling units.

The semi-submersible rig is an enhanced GVA7500 harsh environment design and will be a sister rig to the Deepsea Atlantic and Deepsea Stavanger, which were earlier delivered by DSME.

"The semi-submersible rig has a drilling system that features a dual derrick with a main and a work centre to undertake multiple simultaneous operations."

The unit, which features full conventional mooring, is designed to operate in harsh environments and at water depths of about 3,000m.

Odfjell Drilling CEO Simen Lieungh said: "We are pleased to take delivery of Deepsea Aberdeen. The rig is an important contribution to our fleet and operations, and we are well prepared to ensure a safe and efficient commencement of operations for BP West of Shetland."

Drilling operations are expected to start later in the first quarter of 2015.
