Amazon is preparing to do battle with rival tech giants Google and Microsoft on yet another front, announcing plans for a new cloud-based enterprise email service to take on the likes of Outlook, Exchange, and Gmail.

Part of the company's AWS arm, WorkMail will initially launch with email, calendaring, contact management, and scheduling functionality. It will be compatible with other email clients and Microsoft standards, including Outlook and Active Directory, as well as third-party mobile apps and browser-based options (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer are all supported).

With Amazon's cloud division providing the backend environment, users will be able to access the service from multiple devices and locations (WorkMail also supports the ActiveSync protocol). In terms of security, WorkMail will integrate with AWS Key Management and the AWS Management Console, so data will be automatically encrypted, while network administrators will have the ability to remotely wipe device and enforce corporate IT policies.
