4K-enabled Xbox One and PS4 consoles will launch later this year, Netflix has predicted.

The claims were made by Netflix chief product officer Neil Hunt, who told attendees at CES (via Forbes) that Sony had "promised" 4K support in a future PS4 hardware revision.

Netflix would later play down the claims, but did predict that the Xbox One and PS4 would be due a traditional two-year refresh later this year.

To enable 4K compatibility, the consoles would need to add decoding chips and HDCP 2.2 chipsets, as well as a HDMI 2.0 port to handle 4K at 60 frames-per-second.

Sony and Microsoft hinted at future 4K support in statements, but said they didn't have anything to announce at this time.

"We remain committed to bringing leading entertainment features and services to the living room," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "Beyond that, we have nothing to share at this time."

Sony, meanwhile, issued the following statement: "Support for high-resolution 4K output for still images and movie content is in consideration, but there are no further details to share at this time."
