VCE Rolls Out VxRack Systems for Mobile, Cloud Apps

6/05/2015 by Sharon Shahzad

EMC's VCE division just took the lid off a new family of hyper-converged RackScale systems. The big promise behind the new solutions is simpler deployment of scale-outmobilecloud and distributed Tier 2 apps.

Aimed at enterprises and service providers, the VCE VxRack systems scale from dozens of services to thousands of servers with tens of petabytes of storage capacity. The new systems also promise the highest performance value per IOP.

“The VxRack Systems are purpose built to enable enterprises and service providers to support existing Tier 2 and emerging born-in-the-cloud applications with massive scale capability and cost optimization,” said Praveen Akkiraju, CEO of VCE.

Tapping SDN Trend

VCE is tapping into the software-defined trend with its VxRack Systems that leverage EMC software-defined storage and include built-in networking for "seamless scaling." In addition, it can decouple scaling of compute and storage so customers can maximize its hyper-converged architecture.

VxRack Systems also toot the flexibility horn. Enterprises can choose software stacks that define the personality of the system. For example, IT can pick the hypervisor of its choice, along with Cisco top-of-rack Nexus switching. There’s also a VxRack System customized for VMware environments.

VxRack Systems are architected to connect into VCE Vscale Architecture. That means there’s VCE Vision software support to take enterprises toward a unified data center architecture that can serve more than one location and geographical region.

“Enterprise users have challenges predicting growth and must support a wide variety of applications,” said Stu Miniman, a senior analyst at Wikibon, a wiki for sharing technology and business problems through open source sharing of free advisory knowledge. “VCE's VxRack System provides a scalable architecture that can support multi hypervisors and bare metal deployments, allowing enterprises and service providers to consolidate virtualized, cloud native applications and emerging databases onto a shared infrastructure platform.”

With a vast number of companies moving some, if not all, of their operations to the cloud, security continues to be of major concern. Whilst there are numerous patches and firewalls to safeguard defences, it has been highlighted that the most difficult area to protect against is human interaction. This is the view of Jamie Woodruff, a penetration tester and ethical hacker. Woodruff’s views come after he was contracted to conduct a penetration test in or...
