Hadoop specialist Hortonworks is to acquire the creator and key contributor to the Apache NiFi project, a tool for collecting, managing and analysing data flows that is ultimately based on technology developed by the NSA.

Hortonworks said that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Onyara to expand the capabilities of its own big data platform. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the third quarter of 2015. Financial details were not disclosed.

The firm expects to use Onyara's technology in a new product, Hortonworks DataFlow powered by Apache NiFi, bringing capabilities that will complement its existing enterprise-grade big data product, the Hortonworks Data Platform.

Hortonworks said that the acquisition will make it easier for customers to automate and secure data flows and deliver real-time business insights and actions derived from data in motion.

In particular, the firm has its eye on emerging applications and services around the Internet of Things, involving the collection and analysing of data streams from machinery, sensors, geo-location devices, social feeds, clickstreams, server logs and more, which Hortonworks dubs the Internet of Anything.

"Hortonworks is focused on doing everything possible to enable our customers to transform their business through data-driven insights and actions," said Hortonworks chief executive Rob Bearden.
