Senior finance execs increasingly supporting cloud ERP

It has been reported that the number of senior finance executives supporting cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) operations is on the rise. The data, which was revealed in the latest report from Hitachi Solutions Europe, showed that larger corporations are increasingly looking to cloud computing for their service needs and enjoying the benefits that come with virtual solutions.

315 senior finance professionals were questioned on their views of cloud ERP. In the new survey it was shown that 31% of the organisations questioned had already moved part, if not all, of their ERP operations to the cloud. Although a majority 69% of those questioned said they had not moved ERP to the cloud, 44% admitted it was something they had considered. Of this group, 67% said they would think about moving to the cloud over the coming two years.

Much of the cloud computing market has been taken up by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as they look to reduce initial start-up costs; however, when Hitachi collated data from large companies with over 500 employees, it was found that 27% of these firms are also in the process of shifting ERP to the cloud. This shows that the cloud is no longer solely utilised by small businesses; instead, global corporations are also realising its innovative uses.

Hitachi Solutions Europe’s director, Time Rowe, said: “While in some areas movement to the cloud has been quite rapid, because ERP is seen as business critical and inherently complex, it has been slower to move to cloud. Now, however, we are starting to see a shift as the benefits start to outweigh the perceived risks.”

Questioning the 22% who have already moved their ERP into the virtual world, Hitachi discovered that many had found benefits. The number one priority was identified as easier data access, with 30% highlighting this advantage. Additional benefits include increased ERP performance and lower operating costs. With 80% of this group saying that cloud ERP gave excellent or good working experiences, it seems there is more benefit than simply saving money.

Executive vice-president of Hitachi Solutions Europe, Steve French, explained that working with a trusted implementation partner on a project of this magnitude is vital. “Partners should be able to work with you to test if ERP in the cloud can help meet your business objectives and support you on your cloud journey,” he explained.
