It has been revealed that German enterprise resource planning (ERP) software provider SAP is to work with IBM. As part of the agreement, the two firms will integrate cloud technologies to provide their customers with even better tools to deal with modern business management.

On Wednesday 6th April, it was announced by SAP and Intel that they are to develop their cloud collaboration further and combine several complementary services and technologies. These will modernise their systems for modern-day use and provide a better way of handling the era’s digital economy.

As part of the move, the firms aim to seamlessly join SAP’s cloud platform and software with the cognitive power and cloud systems offered by IBM. As part of the joint effort, work will be hosted in two main locations: SAP’s base in Walldorf, Germany, and Palo Alto, US.

IBM Senior Vice President of Global Business Services Bridget van Kralingen said: “We’re formalising a complementary set of capabilities to simplify and speed outcomes for clients evolving to become cognitive enterprises.”

SAP is one of the world’s largest ERP suppliers, and the software company provide firms in industries such as finance, inventory and manufacturing with the tools to help manage operations. The company’s HANA business software has been a core component of many cloud offerings due to its ability to exploit memory chips, resulting in higher speeds compared to traditional disk drive databases.

For IBM, there have been several years of reinvention as the company attempts to evolve so that it can meet modern world demand. The cloud computing trend has played an important part, and so its new partnership with SAP is a natural step forward.

The collaboration is likely to appeal particularly to established firms that have already shied away from outsourcing work. In addition, organisations that prefer to use a combination of cloud computing and their own data centres are likely to be interested in the move.

It was in October 2014 that SAP announced it would be utilising IBM-operated data centres in addition to its own as a way to continue delivery of its high-quality services. The move came after IBM acquired SoftLayer in 2013 and became a far larger cloud computing player.

As part of the new alliance, IBM and SAP will work to scale services available on the IBM cloud platform. Cognitive capabilities, user and customer experience and on-premise offerings will also be developed further.
