Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s leading provider of cloud computing, said that it is launching a new Asia-Pacific region. The Mumbai region is the sixth area in Asia-Pacific that AWS has grown into, meaning that the company now provides 35 availability zones around the world.

AWS’s newest region is set to cater for the 75,000 consumers based in India who, until now, have been accessing the cloud services portal via other AWS regions. Now, these enterprises will be able to benefit from increased cost savings and improved innovation. They will also be able to enjoy the business boost that accessing the entire platform can provide. It is expected that, once lunched, India-based start-ups, developers, non-profits, government organisations and other enterprises will be able to leverage the platform’s scalability and power to optimise business processes.

As it launches, the region will initially consist of two availability zones, each of which will refer to two separate data centres that have been developed in strategic locations. These have the ability to operate independently to other zones. There will also be the option for customers to have applications running in numerous availability zones to provide a safer, more robust network.

AWS Chief Executive Andy Jassy said that many enterprises and start-ups in India have been using AWS to power their businesses for many years. In fact, Tata Motors Limited Chief Information Officer Jagdish Belwal said: “We have been working with AWS since 2012, steadily moving workloads to the cloud, such as test and development environments for our core enterprise systems – we run one of the largest CRM based Dealer Management implementations in the world – more than 90 Tata digital properties in production on AWS, and many other applications.”

Meanwhile, Jassy revealed that India-based customers have been asking for a local AWS region so that they can enjoy reduced latency and move applications needing data sovereignty. “We’re excited to make this available today, with the same pay-as-you-go pricing, ability to get started immediately without having to negotiate enterprise agreements or wait days for access, and unmatched functionality that customers enjoy in AWS Regions worldwide – all of which allows customers to go from idea to launch faster than ever before was possible,” he added.

AWS will also be offering a full range of certification and training programs to back up the new Mumbai region, with professionals and developers able to use this support to utilise the cloud through best practices.

Why do we punish the victims of hacking?

2017-09-21 09:00:00 +0100

Hacks occur every 39 seconds, with 95% of them targeting governments, retailers and the tech industry. If the hackers are caught, they'll face prison time under the Computer Misuse Act. More often than not, the businesses who are victims of those attacks expose themselves to punishment of their own. The laws that determine the duty of protection owed to businesses and their customers is both vague and broad, making them question just how much protection...

Tech is for girls... and always has been!

2017-09-18 10:00:00 +0100

Today, it's hard to deny that the IT and tech industry is a male-dominated field. Women earn only 28%[1] of computer science degrees, while the quit rate for women in the high tech industry is 41%[2], twice as high as it is for men. These two statistics would suggest that perhaps women aren't just discouraged from entering the tech field, but may find it a challenging environment to work in both in terms of treatment and pay.
