The Rise of Remote Working in Tech

With innovative technology developing at such a rapid rate, working from home is becoming more and more popular with companies large and small. People can work from all corners of the world, at anytime; the modern workplace has arrived.

“We are waltzing into a new era of hypermobility: the anywhere office,” says Oliver Pickup for The Telegraph, and this is especially true in the world of IT/Tech, which currently ranks second in industries embracing remote work. So, why is it so popular among both employees and companies?

Emerging tech has made remote working a breeze, with the volume of smartphones, laptops and tablets, the capacity of mobile technology and an increase in Wi-Fi hotspots around the globe.

Location and time zones are no longer a restriction, as workers can connect to the office network, email on the move and use collaboration tools, which allow documents to be updated in unity. Cloud based apps and chat tools (eg. Slack) provide colleagues with ways of interacting and working together in real time.

“One of the most helpful technologies in making remote work seamless is videoconferencing,” says Harry Glover, Senior Consultant (Big Data & DevOps), who has noticed a vast increase in the number of remote working positions arising in the tech industry.

The result of this new stage of hyperconnectivity is the creation of more flexible working opportunities. Being able to switch on and work from anywhere, at anytime, appeals to a workforce who are looking to avoid the 9 to 5 structure.

And for businesses, there are some serious cost savings to be made through offering remote work. “Certain companies have done away with renting a traditional office and instead run their business out of a shared co-working space to accommodate their largely remote workforce,” explains Harry.

Another way of reducing costs is through the retention of talent. According to Stack Overflow, over 50% of developers said being able to work remotely was a priority when looking for a new job. Tech specialists in remote roles can not only maintain goals while on the move, but they feel empowered, as the flexible way of working encourages trust and good communication with the companies they work for. An increase in job satisfaction will ensure your talent sticks around and your hiring costs are reduced.

The implementation of remote working policies is not just a cost-saver, though. In a study by Vodafone, involving 8000 global employees and employers, it was found that that three-quarters of companies worldwide have already adopted flexible working policies and 61% of them believe that it had increased their company’s profits. Win, win.

Perhaps one of the most interesting and powerful benefits of the increase in remote work, is through helping bridge the gender gap in the tech industry. According to an article in the Huffington Post, “56% of women in the tech industry leave their jobs mid-career, and 51% of women say being a working mother made it difficult for them to advance in their careers.” The physical flexibility, self-management and variation in hours of remote roles, gives female workers the opportunity to embrace a good work/life balance.

So, it is clear that the remote work revolution isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In fact, it’s becoming the new normal. Are you ready?
