Systems Administrator

Job description:

My client a global tech start-up has recently opened a new office in London - they are looking for an infrastructure engineer to join their team who wants to progress into a DevOps specialist - they will provide training and certifications to get you there.

My client is looking for someone with Windows or Linux Server experience (3+ years) and experience looking after office and datacentre infrastructure is a plus. You'll join a team of techies and devs who work together in building and delivering new products and services to our customers. We don't expect you to know everything about all of the technologies we use, so you'll work with other professionals inside and outside the organisation to learn and develop your skills.

What you'll do:

  • Maintain our IoT platform, infrastructure and services for our customers.
  • Help us scale our platform to support organisations in Europe and globally.
  • Be part of a follow-the-sun support model, supporting other regions during working hours.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of our Slough datacentre infrastructure - Co-ordinating with vendor support, updating firmware and software, keeping documentation up to date.
  • Support internal staff, evaluate productivity software and keep datacentre and office equipment secure.
  • Lend your expertise to other teams in the organisation on all kinds of projects.
  • Document everything in a wiki.

Technologies you'll work with:

  • Ubuntu and CentOS; MacOS, Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2016;
  • Ansible and Terraform
  • Github and Gitlab
  • Perl or bash scripting
  • VMWare ESXi
  • Cisco UCS and NX-OS switches, Kemp Load Balancers, Palo Alto Firewalls, Nimble Storage
  • Veeam
  • An assortment of AWS services
  • Future: Containers and Kubernetes for both on-prem and cloud servers

Some projects that we've recently completed or are working on:

  • Rebuilt our AWS infrastructure into Terraform scripts.
  • Proof of concepted Apache Kafka with Spark for real time processing services.
  • Built and manage vendor software environment via Ansible.
  • Added a second M2M network provider.
  • Built and patched a new set of Ubuntu templates in vCenter.

Skills & Requirements

We're looking for:

  • Experience with Windows and Linux, comfortable with MacOS
  • Good understanding of networking: How load balancers work, firewalling, IP addressing and VLANs.
  • Experience working hands-on with computer hardware
  • Experience with configuration management or Infrastructure as Code (We use Ansible and Terraform)
  • A track record of taking on challenges and delivering thorough, stable, and well documented systems.
  • Strong written communication skills and a strong inclination to "document as you go"

Not required, but nice to have:

  • Experience with Palo Alto Firewalls.
  • Experience with Cisco UCS or any converged server platform.
  • Experience with administering and using SQL Server.
  • Exposure to working with a Cloud service like AWS, Azure or GCP.
  • An understanding of GDPR and what PII looks like.
  • Experience with some other technologies we use such as Elasticsearch, Kibana, Redis, Gitlab, Jira, Confluence or Box.
  • Any kind of coding experience.
